Like most motorists, diesel pickup truck owners are also concerned about the expensive cost of fuel. Although a diesel motor is capable of delivering better fuel economy than a gas engine, the higher cost of diesel fuel often closes the gap. Since the prices for diesel fuel are not expected to decrease, diesel truck owners must implement the use of efficient driving strategies. Here are some proven ways to boost fuel efficiency.

  • Take advantage of the extra torque.

Diesel engines are able to deliver an extremely high torque output. Although most people consider lots of torque to be an advantage when pulling heavy loads, the extra pulling power is also a benefit to fuel efficiency. Due to the abundance of torque, the driver of the diesel truck only needs to lightly press the gas pedal when accelerating.

  • Keep the tire pressure at the optimum level.

Over time, the air pressure inside of a tire tends to gradually decrease. Low tire pressure forces the engine to work much harder. A good rule of thumb is to check the tire pressure at least twice a month. It is also important to note that all-terrain tires will yield a substantially lower fuel economy.

  • Do not allow the engine to idle for long periods of time.

Contrary to popular opinion, diesel engines still waste fuel while idling. The advancement in diesel fuel has eliminated the need to idle the engine for an extended duration. Most diesel experts recommend limiting the warm-up period to no longer than three minutes.

  • Consider installing performance parts.

Most performance parts actually boost the performance and fuel efficiency of a diesel engine. Some of the best aftermarket parts include a high-performance exhaust system, cold air intakes, and EGR delete kits.

  • Decrease highway speeds.

The majority of diesel trucks are not designed with a very aerodynamic shape. This factor plays a major role when traveling at fast speeds on the highway. A diesel truck’s fuel economy tends to decline dramatically at speeds over 60 miles-per-hour. The most efficient approach is to maintain an average speed of around 55 mph.
