Although often neglected by some people, the suspension system for instance, plays an important role not only in your car’s movement, but also in your security, as a passenger. While tires and wheels make motion possible, linked with the rest of the car by the chassis, an intermediary part consisting in the frame, suspension system, the tires and the wheels. All these, together with the steering design, help the driver have better control of the vehicle.

What is the role of the suspension system?

In its turn, the suspension system also consists in a series of elements: the tires, the tire air, suspension bushes and linkages. All these elements work together to connect the automobile and the wheels, in order to ensure smooth motion and absorb shock. The system actually serves two purposes. Firstly, it allows the car to remain stable when moving and braking, especially during high speed cornering. Secondly, it partially eliminates shock, thus keeping the passengers isolated from bumps, vibrations, noise and sudden movements. To be specific, you need to know that the components of the suspension system have six functions: they keep the car on the correct height, subdue sock forces, maintain the wheels aligned, support the weight of the automobile (and the occupants and loads), ensure grip and allow the driver to control the vehicle’s direction of travel. This system keeps the occupants safe and ensures a comfortable ride, regardless of road conditions.


Why are suspensions so important?

Of all the features mentioned above, keeping the wheels on the road is most important. Suspensions play a crucial role when it comes to vehicle and driving safely,  as  they are the main element ensuring the car’s grip on the surface of the road. This may become a real challenge while driving on curved paths, since the ground forces acting on the vehicle may destabilize it, and you need to make sure all the components of the system are in perfect condition. The wheels need to be in permanent contact with the road and even the smallest glitch may lead to serious accidents. Taking into consideration their  varied functions, front and rear wheel suspensions may be different in terms of design and size. Besides having an appropriate and efficient suspension system, the driver also has to make sure the automobile’s dynamics are optimised. This ensures a better handling and control, because all the elements of the structure work together to offer perfect tire to road contact. A performing suspension system uses the traction force between the wheels and the road, easing the car’s manoeuvre while cornering.
